“Hey, are you okay?” The speaker was a young boy of about ten; he wore a tunic, leggings, and leather boots, topped off with a green cloak decorated by intricate swirls of silver stitching along the hem. A purple dragon the size of a small cat hovered at his side.

A little girl, perhaps six, looked up from where she had collapsed on the forest floor; the area immediately around her was cratered and burnt. Her clothes had a much more modern look to them than the boy’s—light blue shorts, and a t-shirt emblazoned with a rainbow and silhouetted scenery, each fabricated as a single seamless piece. She wore a flexible phone wrapped around her forearm like a bracelet. “S-stay away—I’m dangerous!” She said, wiping tears and soot away from her eyes, which only covered her face with dirt from her hands. “I don’t want to hurt you!”

“Hey, calm down,” the boy said, his silver eyes softening. “I’m Ian—I’m an adventurer, and I’d be honored to help you.” He bowed slightly as he said it.

“I’m Amethyst,” the dragon said, perching herself on Ian’s shoulder when he straightened up. “Amy, if you must shorten it.”

“I’m Natalie,” the girl said, biting her lip as she looked at the little dragon. “Um, it’s good to meet you both? I’ve never seen a…dragon…before…I thought they were bigger?”

“I’m not small! I’m conveniently travel sized,” Amy said, sitting up a little straighter and flaring her wings out to appear bigger.

“What’s wrong?” Ian asked. “I’d like to help.”

Natalie shook her head. “You can’t…There’s something wrong with me, I keep setting things on fire, or breaking things…at night, sometimes my n-nightmares become real…Mom and dad were arguing about it, and I could feel it about to happen again…so I ran out here…” She buried her face in her hands, and then immediately pulled them away in horror. Thin filaments of lightning crackled along her fingers, a thunderstorm building up in her palms. “Oh no, not again! Get away!”

“It’s alright! I have magic, it’ll help!” Ian said, swooping forward. Amy squawked as the movement dislodged her from her perch, and she had to flap her wings to keep from falling.

“Don’t touch me, you’ll get hurt!” Natalie yelped, pulling her hands away; the building charge of electricity buzzed like hornets right after a rock hit their nest, punctuated with sharp whip-cracks as the lightning arced from place to place.

“Natalie, you don’t have to be afraid,” Ian said; his voice wasn’t that of a ten year old anymore; it was a warm, wide river on which one could float and relax, rather than a babbling backyard creek. “I can help you control this, you just need to trust me,” he said, holding out both of his hands to Natalie, close enough that sparks kept leaping the gap. Natalie hesitated for a moment, looking from Ian’s hands, the way his fingers twitched ever so slightly when a spark connected, then up to his face, the smiling frame around two moon-silver pools that shone the light of hope. Swallowing, she reached out, her fingers tentative butterflies lighting down on open flowers of Ian’s palms. When his smile persisted and he didn’t flinch away, she clasped his hands as though he was the only thing between her and falling from a cliff.

“See? Just let the magic work, the storm die away. Imagine that moment when the sun breaks through storm clouds, and the rain just melts away…” Ian said, his voice distant. He was humming something, some tune like wind sweeping over a field of mountain flowers. The crackling storm gave way to a bright, clear light, and then faded away to nothing.

“How did you…?” Natalie looked up at Ian, and her next words gave way to a snort of laughter—Ian’s hair formed a frizzy cloud around his head, a halo rendered in cinnamon brown rather than the more traditional gold or silver. “Sorry,” Natalie said, fighting back her grin for politeness’ sake. “But really, how did you…?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Ian said. “Hey Amy, wanna see how big a spark we can get?” He asked, holding out a hand to tempt his dragon companion to test just how much static electricity he was charged with.

“No thanks, that’d probably fry my circuits,” Amy said, hovering well away from Ian, as well as gaining altitude to stay out of his reach.

“Circuits…?” Natalie asked, perplexed. “Amy…are you a robot?”

“Yep—though I’m flattered that you thought I was a real dragon,” Amy replied. “I’d open up my battery pack or something to prove it to you, but I’d rather not make myself any more vulnerable to static shock than I am already—you got Ian so charged up that I can smell the ozone wafting off him.”

“My parents don’t like robots…” Natalie sighed. “They said…they said…Nevermind.” She hesitated a moment more, and then turned back to Ian, who was offering her a hand up as his hair slowly settled back to normal. “How did you do that? The magic that got rid of the lightning?”

“I didn’t do that, I helped you get it under control,” Ian replied with a warm smile. “This isn’t something wrong with you—you’ve got powers, gifts, just like me.”

Alright, this is another more expanded piece that I did for college work; this time, I went with an already established story universe, though this takes place several years before the main events of...a story that I just realized I haven't actually posted here, oops! I'll have to fix that, and insert links and stuff...

For now, though, this is a prequel to an upcoming story of mine, taking place in the future of New Bellevue. In this world, computer Artificial Intelligences are common, with full citizenship rights. Human augmentation has taken off with the creation of the Human-2 genetic blueprint, as well as a number of technological add-ons and upgrades available. This is the backdrop against which the avatar phenomena appears; avatars are people able to take on the appearance and powers of imaginary characters by an unexplained warping of reality in their immediate area.

I hope you enjoy this short, and I'll be uploading more of this story world in the future!

Aw, I liked this one! :meow: That was a really cute scene, I guess it was their first meeting and it works well as an introduction. :)
